A mouth watering quartet of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori and Juan Del Potro will do battle in the Olympic Semi-Finals of the Men’s Singles in Rio De Janeiro.

Nishikori of Japan looked down and out before staging an epic comeback to defeat Gael Monfils of France 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(6). Monfils held three match points in the deciding tiebreak. “I thought I had nothing to lose from 6-3 down,” said Nishikori, who is looking for his first Olympic medal. Monfils couldn’t close the deal and Nishikori won five consecutive points to take a semi-final berth.

Britain’s Andy Murray will face Nishikori after defeating America’s Steve Johnson in another tough match. Murray cantered to a first set bagel of the big serving American before Johnson got into the match and took the second set to level up proceedings. The final set went to a deciding tiebreak and the defending Olympic champion had to galvanise his reserves to take it comprehensively 7-2.

The 2008 Singles champion, Spain’s Rafael Nadal looked in trouble against Brazilian local Thomaz Bellucci. Nadal dropped the first set 2-6 before clawing his way back to take the second set and ensure a deciding frame. Bellucci, roared on by a partisan crowd couldn’t live up to his end of the bargain and Nadal ran out a 6-2 winner in the final stanza.

Juan Martin Del Potro booked a semi-final showdown with Nadal by defeating Nadal’s countryman Roberto Bautista Agut in two tightly contested sets 7-5 7-6(4).

The Argentine has spent large parts of the last few years with wrist injury problems and ironically he meets an opponent who has been struggling with similar issues.

me too Isabelle. my gosh -- what a barnstormer each of these match-ups might turn out. each of them also had to REALLY earn their slots. isn't it? andy nearly was in loss trouble . Delpo had to dig out his best against the unheralded young japanese kid.. rafa certainly had has hands full with his fellow leftie kei at match point. \ i mean EACH literally almost LOST! wow!

Maybe this is a bit sentimental, but Juan and Kei would be such heroes in their respective countries if they won. I'll root for Rafa, but I don't think he can win today.

^ True, but I differ with you on whether Rafa can win... The final four are all made of glass right now - even Murray. I think any one of the four can win it. Rafa is running on fumes and might have had the edge taken off him having secured gold in the doubles... but we've seen him come through before when you'd think the gas tank was empty. Delpo always looked gassed, even when he isn't.

I think it's a crapshoot... almost a lottery on who takes the title. I think Kei beats Delpo, Rafa beats Kei, Murray/Rafa - 50/50 although personally I'd lean towards Rafa in a 5 set match with Murray (final is 5 sets), Murray beats Delpo, Delpo might take out Rafa in the semis...

Lots of ifs and buts... and very hard to predict.

It's not the same to "look" gassed than to be like Rafa is after to play so many matches and yesterday after to get the doubles GM I bet that he almost couldn't sleep being so much exciting :yahoo:. But I hope to be wrong ;-):

AFTER very , very long breaks and injury setbacks -- on very LITTLE real practice!!

i am just AWED by BOTH of them! it's like i DON'T want either to WIN bwcause the other one will lose?!!!

    i am SO torn!!

AND GIVE ANDY TWO GOLDS AS REPEAT CHAMP?

    PLEASE?

i don't want any of them to LOSE!! just because they each -- all 3 of them -- have shown SUCH AMAZING, AMAZING brilliance they SO deserve gold!!

    EVEN andy , Britbox?

sure - even he lost sets...but the way andy comes back each time -- to my eye anyway -- seemed to look so much more ''cool'' than delpo's or nadal's ''comebacks".

somehow i feel that andy has juuuussssttt that tiny edge over either delpo and rafa...

although it's hard to say what rafa will step up to if he wins today...we know rafa ISN'T awed by andy at all and has a big career match lead between them.

but still - andy just seems a bit more ''gold prepared" - the way it looks to me.

just wild guessing -- how do you see the alternate match-ups?

    ANDY -RAFA
    ANDY - DELPO?

let's look at it from the point of ANDY as the ''guy to knock off the king's chair"
which CHALLENGER has a better chance, you think?

i have a hard time figuring this one out. in terms of style match-ups.
this is SO exciting -- it's a pity the posters in that overly-controlled Tennis.com haven't ALL MIGRATED HERE!!! BRITBOX has a far better website!

it ain't over til it's over - Carol.
DELPO CAN be occasionally down at critical times against rafa who NEVER gives up.

that can make a difference , u know.
