Lleyton deserves a thread of his own for his final campaign.

The upside of getting sent into retirement by Ferrer is that it will be a hell of a fight between the two. Not necessarily the most enjoyable, but a good way for him to end his career I guess.

Ferrer's mother might be rooting for him, but I'm finding it hard to think who else might be.

That is true, but I am having hard time imagining Hewitt beating a top 10 player at this stage, based on how he played in the last year or so.

Nonetheless, I was rooting for Lleyton to get through his first round to retire at least after beaten by a good player rather than to lose in the first round to a low ranked fellow Aussie.

Unfortunately his run probably ends vs. Ferrer.  Tough to picture him beating the ageless energizer bunny in a best of 5 unless it was on grass.  I know the AO is the home tourney but I'm hoping he gets a decent draw at Wimbledon because he could win a few matches there possibly.

He's playing Wimbledon? I thought this was it.

Nah, he does not. I think twisted is misinformed. Hewitt is retiring here at this event.

I also thought this was Lleyton's last year, therefore last AO, but that he would play out the rest of the year.

So the next match is vs Ferrer, that sucks.  But who knows, Ferrer does not seem to be in such a good form and he switched his racquet.

Ok, I will say it again, Lleyton Hewitt is retiring right here in Melbourne, this is his last event:

Just think about it, where should he retire if not in his own country?

    I know you did:)

With Flavia was different, she had her speech at the pinnacle of her career, after winning her biggest title. But she also played to the end of the season.

Lleyton though has plummeted in the rankings and the season is too long to drag it all along. He is already the DC captain so he will be busy doing more useful things than to be a punching bag on the tour. I am actually looking forward to his celebration.

^^ Yeah it does make sense for him to retire at home.   I think they'll prepare something special for him.  :)

Ah I just figured it was his last year on tour not that AO would be his last tournament.  Well we know Lleyton will give it his all, hopefully he makes it one to remember.

Right enough.  It'll be like Agassi's finish at the USO.  Very emotional, whichever round it comes.  I don't have much more interest in the tournament, anymore, but I'll be watching Rusty finish.  I have had problems with him over the years, but time took arrogance out of him, yet the commitment was always there.  His gritty attitude will be missed.  And if he finishes against Ferrer, it will be fitting to see the dogfight.

I have never been a Hewitt fan, though I admire his tenacity and 'never give up attitude on court'.Yes he has mellowed over the years.I think he will make an excellent DC Captain for Australia's Davis Cup,he has been soo passionate in regards to Davis Cup playing for Australia.I also think he will be a good mentor for Tomic,Nick and Thannasi, they are the future players for Australia.

So apparently Ferrer switched rackets just before the tournament. This makes me think it could go the distance, although it really should be straight sets or 4. I'm hoping for a 6-8 thriller in the fifth.

Lleyton bows out of his final AO rather tamely to David Ferrer.

6-2 6-4 6-4 in favour of the spaniard.
