Fed Cup pairing Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova continued their good run in the Women’s Doubles by defeating Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowski 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4 in the Women’s doubles event in Rio. The Czech duo dropped a tight first set in the tiebreak but roared back in the second, breaking twice to send the match into a deciding stanza.
Breaks were traded in the final set before Safarova and Strycova broke for the final time at 3-3 to take a 4-3 lead. They didn’t look back and the remainder of the match went with serve to ensure a Czech victory. Their opponents in the next round are seasoned doubles veterans Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. The Italians saw of the Chinese pairing of Xu Yi-Fan and Zheng Saisai in two comfortable sets 6-2 6-3
Spanish pairing Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro also won a close encounter with the Belgium team of Kirsten Flipkens and Yanina Wickmayer, prevailing 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
