The Tournament:

The Cincinnati Masters (currently sponsored by the Western & Southern Financial Group and called the Western & Southern Open) is the second largest summer tennis event in the U.S. after the U.S. Open, as its men’s portion is one of nine elite Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP World Tour and its women’s event is one of five Premier 5 events on the WTA Tour.

The tournament began in 1899 and is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States.

About Cincinnati

Cincinnati is the third largest city in Ohio. As the first major US city founded after the American Revolution, as well as its first major inland city, it is considered the first “purely American city.” Though its influence has fallen off since its heyday in the 19th Century, it still carries political importance, as well as being a major sports hub, home of the baseball Reds and NFL Bengals. The city can boast on its art museum, which offers fine works of European and modern artists, as well as great examples from classical antiquity. Its opera company is the second oldest in the US. Famous Cincinnatians include: Sarah Jessica Parker, Steven Spielberg, Peter Frampton and the Isley Brothers.

Monica and Petra have both withdrawn from Cinci.

Eleventh-seeded Petra Kvitova withdrew from the tournament late Saturday with a right leg injury.

The seeds were reordered because Kvitova's withdrawal came before the first schedule was released. No. 13 seed Belinda Bencic moved into the spot formerly occupied by Kvitova.

Monica Puig has also (unsurprisingly) withdrawn.

Serena has withdrawn owing to her still painful shoulder.

    Oh, that's interesting. Thanks, Margaret.

Serena is rather like Novak…she doesn't worry about a tune-up before a Major. She'd be better to rest the shoulder, I'd reckon.

Wow, Serena was streets ahead of everybody not so long ago. I guess it also highlights what a fantastic year Angie has had.

All credit to Angie. She has kept her stellar play up all year. No folding for Angie. She knew how to grab the brass ring and continue to play her game. She hasn't had many dips this year at all.

I think I'm going with Garbine too, but I'll be happy for any of them. Great lineup.

  37. Tennis Fan says:

Garbine didn't handle the conditions well. Pretty bad match from her. She could do with some positivity when things aren't going her way. That's the only thing you can control.

    Pliskova played awesome.

So far Angie and Simona are having an error fest. Will be interesting to see who pulls through.
