Novak Djokovic made a strong statement to ATP Tour by successfully defending his Doha title with a win over world number one Andy Murray.

In their first meeting of the year, Djokovic missed out on converting three match points in the second set as Murray clawed his way back into the contest to force a deciding set. Djokovic ultimately prevailed 6-3 5-7 6-4 in an epic battle lasting just short of 3 hours.

“Best scenario I could ask for for beginning of the season,” Djokovic said. “Playing all five matches in this tournament and then three hours against No. 1 of the world, (my) biggest rival, and winning in a thrilling marathon match is something that definitely can serve as a positive incentive for what’s coming up in Australia.

Djokovic improved to 25-11 in the Head to Head between the two and ended Andy Murray’s 28 match winning streak.
